What is Google AI Overviews?

Google's AI-generated answer that appears above the blue links, summarizing the web for a query.

Google AI Overviews are the synthesized, AI-written summaries Google places at the top of many search results, above the traditional links. They pull from multiple sources, cite a handful, and increasingly satisfy the query without a click — the so-called 'zero-click' effect that reshapes how organic traffic flows.

Appearing inside an AI Overview is the new first position. The pages that get pulled in tend to answer the question directly and early, use clear heading structure, carry supporting schema, and demonstrate credible authorship. It is SEO and AEO converging on the same surface.

For brands, the strategic response is not to fight Overviews but to be one of the cited sources within them. That means question-shaped content, FAQ schema, and freshness — the same levers that improve citation in ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Frequently asked

How do I appear in Google AI Overviews?

Answer the query directly and early on the page, use a clean H1/H2/H3 structure, add FAQ schema, keep content dated and fresh, and ensure strong authorship signals. Overviews favor sources that are easy to quote unambiguously.

Do AI Overviews reduce my traffic?

They can reduce clicks for informational queries answered in full by the summary. The counter-move is to be a cited source (which still earns visibility and some clicks) and to target queries where users need to go deeper than the Overview provides.
